Historic Structures Preservation Project Underway
InteResources Planning, of Bozeman, Montana has launched our Structures History and Preservation project. Current plans include development of an online 3-D projection of the ranch buildings at various points between its founding in 1902 and the present day.
Rough drawing showing the log joints in the southwest corner of the ranch house, and a detailed drawing of the west elevation.
Scott Carpenter, principal investigator from InteResources, outlined the potential value of the project:  "Historic Structure Reports provide a valuable foundation for the rehabilitation, restoration, stabilization or reconstruction of an historic building. They provide the information necessary for making appropriate decisions... as recommended in the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties."

Methodology includes developing a construction history of the property to identify original and subsequent alterations along with a chronology of site development and work. The approach includes study of the ranch structures themselves, plus extensive investigation of available documentation and period photographs. To aid in this work, the Historic Crail Ranch Conservators have delivered to InterResources Planning scanned images of several hundred photographs covering nearly 100 years of ranch history.

The investigator's report will include a thorough architectural evaluation, an analysis of existing conditions, proposed program for general and historical maintenance, and a proposed Historic Preservation Plan with a timeline of recommeded activities to ensure preservation of the ranch.

Already identified is the need for improvement of water drainage away from the base of the main cabin to prevent serious damage to the main structural timbers.

When the Crail Ranch main cabin was re-opened for the season in the spring of 2011, it was noted that the subsidence of the eastern portion of the cabin had increased slightly over the winter.

Greg Shavlik, a structural engineeer with Hyalite Engineers of Bozeman, Montana surveyed the structure and determined that the subsidence was due primarily to water pooling along the exterior walls. He recommended installation of gutters and downspouts to channel water away from the base of the cabin.

In October 2011, Dovetail Raingutters of Belgrade, Montana installed rustic style aluminum gutters and downspouts, similar in appearance to what would be used during the early 1900s, had the Crails ever decided to add gutters to the structure.

The conservators feel that these gutters and downspouts will materially extend the life of the structure without distracting from its historic appearance.
